You should always choose something that you will happy with for the rest of you life. This is your tattoo and it should have a reason for being there. If it means nothing to you, it won't for anyone else either.
Go to a professional and spend as much as you can if you can afford it. Don't let someone's pal with a new outfit practice on you. Find a shop with an artist you like, and maybe ask if you can hang out a bit.
The worst case scenario is finding your ink on someone else. Go to a website like where they offer you thousands of designs for twenty bucks. It is not free but it is pretty damn close.

I agree it is distressing, but if he didn't seem bothered by it, then don't keep bringing it up.
